QVC Spring campaign

Here are some new photos that were shot for QVC's Spring Season... We shot these over two very cold days in New York at a beautiful daylight studio that looked a lot like a Hamptons beach house. Thankfully, the light was amazing and we had great styling from Martha Bernabe and art direction from Darcy Soper.

Recently two of my favorite clients, Lilly Pulitzer and BHLDN, launched their all-important Spring websites. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they both used recent photos of mine for their home pages. I really enjoy shooting website landing pages because the turnaround time is so fast and the website is basically the face of the company. The Lilly shot was fun to do because we shot our model Elsa against one section of the wall, rearranged the flowers and shot two more sections to comp together the huge background...

Red Kap

I was recently hired to shoot the 2012 catalog for Red Kap. The company has been making hardcore workwear since 1923 and I was pretty excited to work on something a little different than what I usually do. The Red Kap team flew up to Philly from Nashville and we rented a garage down the street from my studio for our location. We got some great local talent to model the clothes and we shot it all in one day. Since I usually shoot (and prefer) alot of simple lighting setups, it was cool to do some heavy lighting on these pictures and to give them a unique look. Thanks to my AD Leslie, producer Issa, stylist Lauren and hair & and makeup guru Dawn for helping to pull this off.

Here's some new photos I did recently with the Brownstein Group for Ikea. It was shot in my studio so we had to built a set and make many trips to Ikea for furniture and props. The final image appeared on the cover of catalog and is available in stores everywhere. Recently I was asked to shoot a story about the best place to make out in Philadelphia... The top pick was a photo booth at a bowling alley near my studio. I was unsure who to get to pose so we asked my crew at the studio and everyone was excited about it. I thought they were going to be nervous or shy but once we got rolling, they really got into it. Thanks to my great crew, it was the most fun I've had at a photo shoot in awhile...

It's been a busy few weeks shooting for a bunch of new clients... One of my favorites has to be Sprinkles Cupcakes which is a high end cupcake bakery from Los Angeles. They were the first cupcake only bakery and have legions of fans all across the country. They just recently opened their first store in New York City and I was hired to document the store and capture the uniqueness of that location. If you are in New York, go visit the store at 60th and Lex and try one, it's worth the trip...

Isla Mujeres, Mexico

...Just got back from vacation in Mexico and had the chance to stay three nights in Isla Mujeres which is a small island off the coast of Cancun. On the island, there is a beautiful cemetery which anyone can visit and walk around. It's an above ground cemetery like the ones you see in New Orleans. The colors are amazing and everywhere you look there is peeling paint and sun bleached cement. Normally, I would stray far away from taking any photos in a graveyard. They are on my "no photographs allowed" list which also includes such gems as cats, homeless people and sunsets. However, the place was just to interesting to pass up so with my apologies on the subject matter, here are some of my favorites...

--- Just got back from a very cold weekend in New York where I attended a dslr video workshop. I have been wanting to learn video and video editing for a while and thought it was a good time to start. The Canon 5D Mk 2 produces some beautiful moving images and it was cool to see some of the tricked out rigs that people are using. There's alot involved: scripts, lighting, sound, editing, etc. but I am looking forward to adding a reel or two to my website and possibly shoot video for some of my clients. My first project is going to be a simple behind the scenes spot showing my studio and what goes on there. My crew and I started to shoot a little bit each day (thanks to Ryan for this bit) and will hopefully have something up in a Month or so. In the meantime, here's a quick sampling from a job the other day.

Philadelphia Magazine just released their annual "best restaurants" issue as they do every January. It's a comprehensive list of the best places to eat in Philadelphia and it's always an interesting read. I was the lucky photographer to be chosen to shoot the issue and sample some great food. Here are some some of the photos that were published and some outtakes from the 13 restaurants that I visited.

Grey Goose Holiday

Now appearing at fine vodka retailers everywhere, the 2010 Grey Goose holiday display... Shot in New York last August, it was a pretty complicated setup with no less than seven lights and six models. What was surprising was how smooth it went and I'm really happy with the final image. Thanks to everyone from Grey Goose and Moosylvania for great shoot. Think I'll go have a Grey Goose martini now...

Lilly Pulitzer gift book

It's always satisfying as a photographer to see your work in print form and even better when it runs as single images in full bleed. There are two photography events in the Philadelphia area coming up this weekend... On Friday, Nov 5th, Bambi gallery will host a show of former U Arts faculty and students. I'll have a few pieces in the show and the work should be interesting and diverse. Plus, I'm bringing beer so it's a no brainer. On Saturday night, the Photo Review is holding their annual photo auction which is always a good time and an opportunity to get a nice piece at a good price. Hope to see you there!

There is a really cool website that I've been looking at and thought I'd pass it along... It's called 500 Photographers and it's run by Pieter Wisse. Here's his explanation of the site's purpose :

"500 photographers is a weblog that posts 5 active photographers a week for 100 weeks. The photographers can be from any discipline within the photographic range, but they have to be worth looking at and have a certain level of quality. When we get to number 500, we will have a deep database of great photographers."

The new Philadelphia Wedding magazine is now out and here are some highlights!

Instead of breaking the issue into sections, design director Michael McCormick and editor Carrie Denny decided to shoot a massive thirty-four page feature that featured the hottest dresses, cakes, jewelry, etc. all in one story. The feature ran without any ads in the middle and I was really flattered to be given such a large and creatively inspiring task. The story begins with a reddish / brown Fall theme and slowly progresses into a cold Winter feel. All of the trees, leaves, and furniture were spray painted and then glitter was painstakingly glued on using Elmer's and paintbrushes. This prep took many days and lots of manpower and patience. Then we built this large set in my studio complete with walls, floors and a ceiling made from chicken wire to hang the branches from. Four models were used over a period of five days and we smartly enlisted Emily Von Fange to do the tricky post-production. Check out the issue at your local newsstand or bookseller!

Bravo's show Double Exposure is on tonight and here is a preview of Markus and Indrani shooting Lady Gaga... Even when they have no time and are stressed out, they still manage to fight in front of everyone. Markus is reasonably creepy, it's a fun show to watch if you're in the business...

I just got my new issue of Philly Mag with my Best of the Beach cover story... The cover looks amazing and I'm really happy with the "old postcard" style layout. We shot it on location last August during a hot five day trip from the Northern Shore of New Jersey down to Cape May. Sort of a photographer's dream assignment to head out with a camera and a gps and see what happens. Everything these days is so calculated and pre-determined that's it's a pleasure to shoot loose now and then. Here's some photos that ran in the story and some of my unpublished favorites...

I just checked out the blog magazine death pool and found it encouraging that very few magazines have gone under so far this year . In 2009, it seemed like every Month brought the demise of another magazine. I know that ad rates are way down and the outlook for many titles is uncertain but maybe if they continue to provide good content and design, print based magazines can coexist with the new digital media. Television did not kill the film industry and radio still thrives in the age of digital music. I think it's time to start thinking positive about the future of the magazine.

American Photography 26 slide show

As I previously posted, I was recently chosen to be included in the American Photography Annual which comes out this Fall. Out of more than 8000 entries, only 314 were selected to be in the book. It's a pretty diverse group this year and the pictures seem less technology driven and appear to pay respect to the past. They just released a slide show which includes all the photos and it's worth a few minutes of your time.

I was cleaning off my computer desktop and came by these photos that I recently did for Philadelphia Magazine. They are of a guy named Chris Brooks who went into cardiac arrest and was clinically dead for about 35 minutes. Pretty wild story and he was so gracious in allowing me to take his portrait. The photo director at Philly Mag knew that I had lots of experience with the old school 4x5 camera and thought it would be cool to shoot 4x5 polaroids (expired 2002) and get them scanned. That where the weird color and fogging comes from. I think it complimented the story really well and here's a link if you want to read it-

Campbell's

I recently completed a project for Campbell's Soup Company that was both challenging and rewarding... Equal parts portrait and food photography, the photos featured 32 models eating and enjoying various Campbell's products. It was quite a feat to keep it running smoothly but we had some great creative people on set to help and it ran incredibly smooth. Many thanks to all the people from Anthem and 40/40 and the Campbell's internal creative team. In postproduction, the models are being converted to B&W and the food will be featured in color. Got the new issue of Philly Mag this week and I have a bunch of new food shots and chef portraits in it. All shot with 1 light, very simply, on a white seamless. The layout and printing look great and I'm really pleased with the issue. I just received an e-mail from a designer (who I never met) who used to work at Spin Magazine in the 90's... She was moving out of her house and ran across an old promo card that I sent to Spin in 1990! She said that she always loved the image and that it has a home forever. I haven't seen that photo in 20 years and it was shocking to see how crude my promos were before computers. Thank you Toni for sending it...

Warhol’s ‘200 One Dollar Bills’ Fetches $43.8 Million in N.Y.

Nov. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Andy Warhol’s1962 “200 One Dollar Bills” fetched $43.8 million tonight at Sotheby’s contemporary- art auction in New York.

The seller was London-based collector Pauline Karpidas, according to two people familiar with the situation. Karpidas couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

The work, estimated to sell for $8 million to $12 million, is among the artist’s earliest silkscreen paintings, a process that became his signature technique. The 7 1/2-foot wide canvas comprises repetitive images of 200 actual-sized one-dollar bills, reproduced in tones of black on grey, with a blue treasury seal.

The buyer was an undisclosed telephone bidder.

Just two of 54 lots didn’t sell; the auction totaled $134.4 million, against the company’s pre-sale estimate of $97.7 million. Estimates don’t include commission.

   A preview at the University of the Arts, Dorrance-Hamilton Building, Broad and Pine Streets, Philadelphia, will be held on Friday, November 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday, November 21 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
   The event will feature an international slate of photographers as well as a host of Philadelphia artists. Beginning and experienced collectors alike will have the opportunity to bid on work by such historic masters as Edouard Baldus, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Edward S. Curtis, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Leonard Misonne, Gordon Parks, Man Ray, Herb Ritts, W. Eugene Smith, Edward Steichen, Josef Sudek, and Clarence H. White.

Diesels and Dinosaurs

I was looking thru my photo book collection and found myself returning to one of my old favorites, Steve Fitch's Diesels and Dinosaurs from 1976. If you like Americana, old postcards, drive-ins, neon, truck stops and road trips, you should check it out. This book quietly influenced alot of other photographers and I really appreciate the cropping and directness of the photographs. A great dark and humorous view of the American West.
